Background: Diplomatic speed in Washington.... President Kennedy of the United States and Canadian Premier John Diefenbaker set a new pattern in White House talks, Feb 20. They met for three house, and it was believed to be the firs time any head of Government had flown to Washington for lunch and returned home the same day.
The talks - before and during the meal - were merely exchanges of views, however, and not negotiations requiring decisions. Traditionally such meetings have been accompanied by a good deal of protocol - but this time there were no frills.
A communique said they discussed defence, security problems, disarmament and various issues affecting the United States and Canada. It added that they "re-emphasized the importance of close consultation on economic matters".
