Background: KANDY - THE ANCIENT CITY SOME 72 MILES (115 KMS) FROM COLOMBO - GAVE A GILTERING WELCOME TO THE BURMESE HEAD OF STATE, GENERAL NE WIN, DURING HIS WEEK'S VISIT OF CEYLON, WHICH ENDED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

DURING HIS CEYLONESE VISIT, THE GENERAL HAD TALKS WITH PRIME MINISTER, MR. DUDLEY SENANYAKE, ON TRADE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. HIS LAST VISIT TO CEYLON WAS IN DECEMBER 1962 TO ATTEND A SIX NATION COLOMBO CONFERENCE.

IN KANDY, THE PERADENIYA BOTANICAL GARDENS, WHICH HAS SOME RARE COLLECTIONS OF ORCHIDS, ATTRACTED GENERAL NE WIN'S ATTENTION. FIRST, HE PLANTED A YOUNG AMHERESTIA NOBILIN TREE WHICH WAS BROUGHT FROM BURMA TO COMMEMORATE HIS VISIT. AT THE ORCHID NURSERY, THE GENERAL TOOK COLOUR PICTURES OF THE ANTHURIAMS AND RARE ORCHIDS.

(BURMA IS ONE OF CEYLON'S PRINCIPAL SUPPLIERS OF RICE, THE COUNTRY'S STAPLE FOOD. LAST YEAR CEYLON IMPORTED 250,000 TONS. BUT THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE RECIPROCAL BUYING BY BURMA OF CEYLON'S PRODUCE. AT THEIR RECENT TRADE TALKS, MR. SENANAYAKE PRESSED GENERAL NE WIN TO BUY MORE FROM CEYLON, PARTICULARLY COCONUT PRODUCTS.)
