    Background: The British submarine Aurochs, which was fired on by an unidentified aircraft while on exercise in the Celebes area arrived in Balmoral Naval Base, Sydney, tonight. The Aurochs is attached to the Fourth submarine Division based on Sydney. Her captain Lt Commander French, was greeted on arrival by Commander H.P. Westmacott, in charge of the Fourth Submarine Division.

    When asked about the starting events at sea, Lt. Commander French said that immediately the attack began he ordered the submarine to dive and stay in deep water. The aggressor was a twin engined aircraft which had vanished from the scene when the submarine surfaced an hour and a half later.

    It is understood that no official action has been taken by the British Government to protest at the attack.
