Background: The city of Brussels is as nervous and excited as any hostess making last minute preparations for the biggest party of her life.

The Brussels World's fair, due to open on April 17th..just a little more than six weeks off...is the scene of frantic activity these days.

It is the focal point of the fair and within these huge metal globes the Belgians are building exhibits, restaurants and observation rooms from which the whole fair grounds may be viewed. Visitors will be admitted for approximately 1 a half-dollar fee.

Workmen are swarming all over the huge fair grounds making final preparations. As is always the case, with every fair, everyone is worried that things won't be ready in time. Somehow, they always are. Of course, there can never be an international gathering these days without the old bugaboo of whether the United States or the Soviet Union will gain the most prestige.

The Belgians would like to avoid such a competition but everyone knows that it is inevitable.

However, hopes are high that the tone will be considerably friendlier than it has been in past get-togethers.

One thing is certain. Visitors are more to be charmed by the contrast between old Brussels and the new fiar, a contrast demonstrated here, most graphically.
