Background: INTRODUCTION: The United States military operation Bright Star '82 moved from Egypt to neighbouring Sudan on Tuesday (1 December). The joint military operation exercises has been planned by President Reagan to test the readiness of America's Rapid Deployment Force and give concrete proof of Washington's support for friendly states in the Middle East.

SYNOPSIS: Wadiseidna Air Base and these huge helicopters signify the start of the biggest ever military exercise on Sudanese soil.

These C 130s carry men and equipment for the exercise. Sudan leads the list of US aid recipients in black Africa. Last year it got 115 million dollars economic assistance well ahead of Kenya and Zimbabwe. The Reagan administration wants to increase the amount to 150 million dollars.

U.S. military aid to the Sudan has risen from five million dollars in 1979 to 100 million dollars in 1982. The flags signifying co-operation between the two countries fly above the camp where the exercises are to begin.

These Sudanese troops are among the most highly trained in the world. Sudan has been playing a pivotal role in the Chadian crisis. They trained troops loyal to former defence minister Hissene Habre. There were certainly no punches pulled in this mock battle.

American officers and their Sudanese counterparts watch the crack troops in action.

The team's speciality is karate.

These war games are to be followed by other exercises in Somali and Oman. The total cost of Operation Bright Star '82 is estimated at 60 million dollars.
