Background: Over GBP220,000 was paid for paintings, drawings and prints sold in Amsterdam, Holland, March 22. It was the opening day of a three-day auction in which part of the large collection of a wealthy Dutch businessman who died in 1954 is being sold. In addition to the pictures, silver and porcelain are also up for auction.
Bidding has been keen, and in the auction room were many representatives of Dutch museums, as well as dealers and experts from Britain and several other countries.
One of the notable on the first day was GBP17,485 for a painting by the 17th-century artist Pieter de Hoogh of the interior of Amsterdam town hall. Two small works by Rembrandt - a drawing of ruined house and an etching of Burgomaster Jan Six- fetched approximately GBP7,700 and GBP1,900 respectively.
Nearly GBP12,000 was paid for another 17th-century painting - a view of the Amsterdam bourse, by Emanuel de Witte, and a wedding scene of the same era, by Jan Steen, sold for over GBP9,000.
Good prices were also paid for modern pictures. A street scene by George Handrik Breitner, who died in 1923, fetched over GBP6,500, and view of Amsterdam by Vincent van Gogh, painted in his student days, went for over GBP4,000.
