Background: The wizards of basketball -- the harlem Globetrotters from the United States -- who are currently touring Europe, have been delighting crowds in Britain recently with some brilliant displays. They've been appearing at Wembley in London in a special Silver Jubilee year show.

The Globetrotters are now in their 51st consecutive season. Their visit to Wembley was their 28th. At the end of 1976, their 50th year, the Globetrotters had played 12,406 games and won all but 323 of them. Their last defeat was in 1971.

SYNOPSIS: The Globetrotters, in the striped pants, showed effortless superiority over their unfortunate opponents, a team called the New Jersey Reds. The scoring started almost immediately.

The Globetrotters' magic passing cast a spell that just couldn't be broken.

The Trotters' bag of tricks was soon on display. Dallas Thornton, in the Number Ten shirt, had them fooled with this one.

Larry Rivers, the master show-dribbler, gave some breath-taking performances.

But for sheer exuberance it would be hard to match this.

The Trotters' player-coach, Meadowlark Lemon showed again and again why he is the world's most popular player. The New Jersey Reds, however, did manage to hit back sometimes.

The exhibition would have been incomplete without the Globetrotters' famous practical jokes. Meadowlark Lemon, the clown prince of basket-ball, raised most of the laughs.

The final score -- 79 to 62 -- was closer than it might have been if the Trotters had gone for victory alone. The way they play, it's not just winning that counts -- it's how they win.
