Background: A RECORD FLEET OF 79 YACHTS FROM SIX COUNTRIES ASSEMBLED IN SYDNEY HARBOUR ON FRIDAY (26 DEC) FOR THE START OF THE 25TH ANNUAL SYDNEY-TO-HOBART OCEAN RACE. UNDER LEADEN SKIES THE RACING YACHTS MOVED THROUGH THOUSANDS OF SPECTATOR CRAFT FOR THE 640-MILE (1,030 KM) RACE DOWN THE COAST AND ACROSS THE TEMPESTUOUS BASS STRAIT TO TASMANIA.

AMONG THOSE WAITING TO START WAS THE SOLE JAPANESE ENTRY, THE 36-FOOT (11 M) YACHT "VAGO". THE RACE HAS ATTRACTED 17 FOREIGN ENTRANTS, NINE FROM NEW ZEALAND, FOUR FROM BRITAIN, ONE EACH FROM THE UNITED STATES, JAPAN, FRANCE AND NEW GUINEA.

BRITISH CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER EDWARD HEATH WAS AT THE HELM OF HIS NEW CRAFT "MORNING CLOUD" (34FT; 10 METRES). AN HOUR AFTER THE START HE WAS LYING IN EIGHTH PLACE.

ANOTHER BRITISH HOPE IS ARTHUR SLATER'S "PROJECT OF WHITBY". HE WAS REPORTED THIRD ON HANDICAP EARLY IN THE RACE.

THE SMALLEST CRAFT IN RACE IS "ZILVERGEEST", ONE OF THE AUSTRALIAN ENTRIES, ONLY 29 FOOT (UNDER NINE METRES).

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE AND THE HARBOUR HEADS MADE AN IMPRESSIVE BACKDROP AS THE 79 YACHTS MOVED OUT TOWARDS THE OPEN SEA.

IN A LIGHT NORTH-EASTERLY BREEZE NEW ZEALANDER KIM DAVER'S "FIDELIS" (48 FT; 14.6 METRES) TOOK AN EARLY LEAD BUT WAS LATER OVERHAULED BY THE BIG AUSTRALIAN "APOLLO" OF BOB MILLER. BRITISH NEWSPAPER PUBLISHER SIR MAX AITKEN WAS ALSO AMONG THE LEADERS IN "CRUSADER".

THE YACHTS WERE SOON STRUNG OUT OVER 60 MILES (96 KM) OF SEA. AS THE LEADERS ENTERED THE BASS STRAIT OFFICIALS SAID IT WAS UNLIKELY ANY WOULD REACH HOBART BEFORE TUESDAY (30 DEC). LIGHT EAST TO NORTH-EAST WINDS WERE FORECAST.
