Background: A total of 5,000 Palestinian fighters and Lebanese were released on November 24 by the Israeli authorities in return for just six Israeli soldiers. Israeli's Defence Minister Moshe Arens admitted at Tel Aviv airport Israel was giving a lot for a little. Three thousand five hundred of the prisoners came from the Ansar camp in southern Lebanon. They were ferried by buses to Sidon and other Lebanese towns. In Sidon 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Beirut, the prisoners were taken to an abandoned slaughterhouse. Under the eye of Israeli militiamen, they then walked and ran through the streets to friends and relatives who had been waiting for them. A further 1,000 Palestinian guerrillas chose to be flown to Algeria, where the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) has its political headquarters. On arrival, the men were given a heroes's welcome. Reuters reported that although it had appeared that Israel had given in to the PLO, the return of the thousands need not necessarily benefit the PLO in its battle for survival.
