The Arab Mayor of Nablus on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan has been detained by Israeli military authorities, and is facing deportation.

SALEH SPEAKING THROUGH INTERPRETER: "The Executive Committee of the PLO have convened today to discuss the issue of the brother Baasam Shaqa the Mayor of Naplous. We see that as an aggressive and harsh act which the Begin government is taking against the personalities and the members, patriotic personalities, in the West Bank that are stopping facing the Camp David self (indistinct) project. A dangerous step in accordance with the terrorists plan of the Begin government. The Committee of the PLO, in its emergency meeting, today have decided to carry out the large-scale movement of the Palestinian and National levels, appealing for all international establishment sand societies and all the Societies of the human rights in trying to confront this Zionist crime, which conflicting with the simplest human rights as mentioned in the Helzinki Conference."

Background: The Arab Mayor of Nablus on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan has been detained by Israeli military authorities, and is facing deportation. Mayor Bassam El Shaqa was detained on Sunday (11 November) for expressing sympathy with Palestinian raiders who killed 34 Israeli bus passengers last year. He has three days to appeal before being deported. Shortly after Mr. Shaqa was detained, the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation held an emergency meeting in Beirut. Spokesman Abdel Jawad Saleh condemned the Israeli action as a dangerous step.
