Background: Playing on their home ground of Stamford Bridge in London, Chelsea today (Wednesday) reached the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup by defeating Bulgaria's CSKA Sofia by 1-Nil. This victory, with their first-leg win last week over the Bulgarians, gave Chelsea a 2-Nil win on aggregate. The winning goal was scored by Centre-Half David Webb in the forty-third minute - after a corner from Peter Houseman was headed his way by Keith Weller.
Sofia attacked early - in all-out effort to wipe out Chelsea's first-leg victory - but the home team's defence was strong and the visitors had little chance of succeeding.
Chelsea goal-keeper Peter Bonetti was almost caught out by a fierce volley by Nikodimov - but he moved in fast and pushed the shot away.
Most of the rest of the first half concentrated around the Bulgarian goal - and, two minutes before half-time, Webb scored the winning goal.
Recovering desperately, Sofia made two hard attacks to try to equalise in the first half - but Bonetti was in top form and the attacks were foiled. Chelsea then resumed the offensive but the injured Ian Hutchinson missed what should have been an almost certain goal from four yards as the first half ended.
Sofia kicked-off in the second half and put up a valiant fight to the end. But they did not manage the equaliser - and it was only luck that saved them from a 2-goal defeat when Hutchinson once again mis-hit a ball which had come his way after Gaganelov failed to clear a cross.
