Background: The Polish Prime Minister, Mr. Piotr Jaroszewicz, announced on Wednesday (March 29) that his Government would shortly ratify its non-aggression treaty with West Germany. He was addressing the newly-elected Parliament in Warsaw, and this film showing his speech provides rare coverage, including some relatively new faces in Polish politics.
The treaty, signed in December 1972, was at the same time in the process of ratification in the West German Bundestag. Under it, a frontier agreement puts nearly 40,000 square miles (104,000 square kilometres) of pre-World-War-Two German territory inside Poland.
SYNOPSIS: The newly-elected Polish Parliament, the Sejm, sat for its first term this week....here, on its second day, addressed by its Speaker, Mr. Stanislaw Gucwa. The Sejm was discussing the country's treaty with West Germany, signed in December 1970, which still has to be ratified. Among the listeners, Minister of Defence General Wojciech Jaruzeleelski.
Here....Prime Minister Mr. Piotr Jaroszewicz, a member of the ruling Politburo and a former deputy premier.
??? Boss Edward Gierek, on the right, and Politburo member Mr. Jan Szydlak.
During the discussion Premier Jaroszewicz announced that the treaty would be ratified shortly. Under its terms, a frontier agreement will put nearly 40,000 square miles of pre-War German territory inside Poland. In the West German Bundestag, meanwhile, the treaty was already in the process of ratification....but under strong attack from the opposition Christian Democrat Party.
Deeply involved in the issue...Polish Foreign Minister Stefan Olszowski
No firm date was set, however, for the beginning of the ratification process.
