    THE BALTIMORE VIOLENCE FOLLOWED THE DEATH ON THURSDAY OF DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, AND WAS DUPLICATED IN NEARBY WASHINGTON, D.C., CHICAGO, AND PITTSBURGH, AS WELL AS SEVERAL OTHER SMALLER CITIES.

    PRESIDENT JOHNSON SENT THE REGULAR ARMY TROOPS AT THE REQUEST OF THE MARYLAND GOVERNOR, SPIRO AGNEW, WHEN IT BECAME APPARENT THAT BALTIMORE CITY AND MARYLAND STATE POLICE WERE UNABLE TO HALT THE FIREBOMBING AND LOOTING SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY.

    GOVERNOR AGNEW PLACED THE HISTORIC OLD EAST COAST CITY UNDER MARTIAL LAW ON SATURDAY NIGHT, FIVE HOURS AFTER ACTUAL RIOTING BROKE OUT IN THE NEGRO SECTION OF EAST BALTIMORE. LOOTING AND ARSON WERE CASUAL AND SPORADIC SATURDAY AND FLARED UP AGAIN ON SUNDAY. STORES THAT WERE LOOTED RANGED FROM A LARGE CHAIN DEPARTMENT STORE TO SMALL CORNER GROCERIES.

    BALTIMORE'S MAYOR, THOMAS D'ALESANDRO SAID MOST RIOTERS AND LOOTERS SEEMED TO BE YOUNGER THAN 20, AND HE ESTIMATED THOSE INVOLVED IN DISORDERS AT NO MORE THAN 3,000 OF BALTIMORE'S NEGRO POPULATION.
