Background: In the World Swimming Championships, the United States has continued its domination of the medal table. The East German women's team which only two years ago won 10 out of 11 swimming gold medals at the Montreal Olympics, had by Wednesday (23 August) not managed a single win. One of their group said "It's not that we've got slower, it's just that they have got faster". But not every event has gone America's way.

SYNOPSIS: The men's 400 metres freestyle is one of the events in which the United States has been supreme over the years, but it was taken from them on Wednesday by a Russian, Vladimir Salninkov. He swam a brilliantly planned race letting two Americans, Jeff Float in lane 5 and William Forrester in lane 7 set a blistering pace. Then Salninkov came through hard to set a new European record of 3 minutes 51.49 seconds, only 0.38 seconds slower than the world record set by Tim Shaw of the United States.

Tracy Caulkins, the 15 year old American star of the championships claimed her second world record and third gold medal when she won the 400 metres women's individual medley. Miss Caulkins left everyone behind with her opening butterfly stage of one minute 3.51 seconds, then built steadily on her lead.

No swim better illustrated the measure of the United States' swimmers improvement, and East Germany's decline in world swimming, as Ulrike Tauber, the world record holder failed to catch the young American. But there was no stopping Miss Caulkins as she forged ahead to beat Miss Tauber by a remarkable seven seconds. Petra Schneider, another East German was third.

So another world record tumbles, with 1.94 seconds being clipped from the old record.
