PAISLEY: "BECAUSE THIS IS JOHN CALVIN'S CITY AND THE POPE IS NOT HAPPY TO GO ALONE, HE IS BRINGING SOMETHING LIKE 10-THOUSAND ITALIANS OVER THE BORDER TO TRY AND LINE THE STREETS TO GIVE THEMSELVES SOME SORT OF EULOGY AND AS YOU KNOW BY THE PRESS TODAY THE PAPAL FLAG IS NO BEING FLOWN UNIVERSALLY IN GENEVA AND THERE IS GREAT RESENTMENT AMONG THE GENEVA PEOPLE AND THIS IS CERTAINLY AN INSULT TO JOHN CALVIN AND TO HIS MEMORY."

Background: THE REVEREND IAN PAISLEY, THE MILITANT ANTI-CATHOLIC IRISH PASTOR, IS FLYING TONIGHT TO GENEVA TO PROTEST AGAINST POPE PAUL'S VISIT TO THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES TOMORROW. WHEN HE EMERGED FROM AN HOUR-LONG MEETING WITH THE SWISS AMBASSADOR IN LONDON HE SAID THAT THERE WAS NOW A GREATER CHANCE OF HIS GETTING INTO GENEVA, AND HE TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE POPE'S VISIT WAS AN INSULT TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN CALVIN.

SWISS AUTHORITIES HAD EARLIER BANNED MR PAISLEY FROM GOING TO GENEVA.

AS HE ENTERED TO EMBASSY, MR PAISLEY TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HE WAS LATE AND WOULD TALK TO THEM LATER.

WHEN HE EMERGED AFTER THE HOUR-LONG MEETING, MR PAISLEY PAUSED FOR A KERB-SIDE PRESS CONFERENCE.

MR PAISLEY SAID AT LONDON AIRPORT TODAY THAT THE BAN ON HIS GOING TO GENEVA WAS IMPOSED PURELY ON THE GROUNDS OF RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION.
