    TOKYO, JAPAN

Tokyo students have developed a robot with musical talents. The 2-metre (6'3") robot can not only play the organ, it also reads the music. The project, under Professor Echeo Kato (phonetic), cost one-and-a-quarter million dollars and is due to be officially presented to the scientific community at the Science Expo exhibition next year.Using a light sensor, the robot takes 30 seconds to "learn" a piece of music which it then plays. It can also adapt its pitch and tempo to accompany a singer.A one-chip microcomputer controls the movements of its hands across the keyboard and its feet on the pedals.Professor Kato claims his creation has an almost professional technique. It follows closely on the heels of another Japanese robot which can paint good likenesses in under two minutes.
