Background: Union disputes have disrupted the printing of two of Australia's best known newspapers. The evening "Sun" in "Sydney Morning Herald", published by the same firm, has appeared in abbreviated form -- produced by staff labour only.

Printers have been striking for two weeks over wages and conditions. About 250 unionists, including printers and supporters, have been picketing the "Sun" and "Herald" building in Sydney and minor disturbances erupted into a brawl with police.

Police were called in with orders to clear the way for delivery vans picking up copies of the "Herald" and the "Sun" which reappeared this week.

The pickets argued with police, claiming that they were within their rights keeping delivery trucks away.

One man was hit by a truck and suffered lacerations. He was treated by a staff nursing sister employed by John Fairfax and Sons, publisher of the "Sun" and "Herald".

Police engaged the unionists in wild scuffles and restrained a number of demonstrators. No charges were laid.

Representatives of the Printing union said members were irate that the publisher had transferred some of the "Sun" and "Herald" printing operations to a rival organisation.

The dispute is still simmering and fears are held for a general spread through the industry.
