Background: ARAB COMMANDOS ON FRIDAY (30 MAY) BLEW UP AN OIL PIPELINE WHICH CARRIED SAUDI OIL TO THE LEBANESE PORT OF SIDON. THE COMMANDOS ATTACKED THE SECTION OF THE PIPELINE WHICH PASSED THROUGH THE ISRAELI-OCCUPIED GOLAN HEIGHTS IN SYRIA.

AN ESTIMATED 480,000 BARRELS A DAY WERE PUMPED THROUGH THE 3,00-MILE PIPELINE WHICH FED A LARGE REFINERY AT SIDON. UNTIL THE INCIDENT, IT WAS NOT WIDELY KNOWN THAT ARAB OIL WAS FLOWING UNINTERRUPTED ACROSS TERRITORY CAPTURED BY ISRAEL FROM SYRIA IN THE 1967 SIX-DAY WAR.

WELDERS HAVE SEALED OFF THE TWO OPEN ENDS OF PIPE AND REPAIRS ARE EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN A WEEK.

THE AUTHORITATIVE EGYPTIAN NEWSPAPER, AL AHRAM, TODAY (1 JUNE) STRONGLY CRITICISED THE COMMANDO ATTACK SAYING IT WAS NEITHER JUSTIFIABLE NOR IN LINE WITH ARAB INTERESTS. THE NEWSPAPER WENT ON TO POINT OUT THAT, ALTHOUGH THE PIPELINE PASSED THROUGH THE ISRAELI-OCCUPIED GOLAN HEIGHTS, THE DAMAGE REPRESENTED NO HARM TO ISRAEL.
