Background: A TUMULTUOUS WELCOME IN WEST BERLIN YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) FOR THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY-GENERAL, ROBERT KENNEDY WHEN HE ARRIVED TO UNVEIL A MEMORIAL PLAQUE TO HIS BROTHER, THE LATE PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY.

AS HE ARRIVED AT JOHN F. KENNEDY PLATZ, ROBERT KENNEDY WAS CHEERED WILDLY BY A HUGE CROWD -- ESTIMATED AT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE. THEN THE VAST GATHERING BECAME SILENT, EXCEPT FOR THE STRAINS OF THE OLD GERMAN TUNE "ICH ??? HATT' EINEN KAMERADEN" (I HAD A COMRADE) PLAYED BY THE POLICE BAND, AS THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL UNVEILED THE PLAQUE.

THE PLAQUE HAS BEEN DESIGNED BY THE SCULPTOR, RICHARD SCHEIBE AND IS SET INTO A PILLAR OF THE MAIN DOOR OF THE SCHOENBERGER RATHAUS -- FROM WHOSE BALCONY PRESIDENT KENNEDY ONE YEAR AGO MADE HIS FAMOUS SPEECH IN WHICH HE TOLD A CROWD OF BERLINERS "ICH BIN EIN BERLINER" (I AM A BERLINER.)
AFTER THE UNVEILING ROBERT KENNEDY SPOKE TO THE CROWD FROM THE BALCONY. HE SAID:
THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL'S SPEECH WAS FREQUENTLY INTERRUPTED BY APPLAUSE AND THE CHANTING OF "KEN-NE-DY, KEN-NE-DY" AS HE WENT ON:
MR KENNEDY STAYED IN BERLIN FOR TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.
