Background: A prank by students of Montevideo University on Saturday resulted in the death of one of them. The students attempted to stop a bus to collect money from the passengers to buy food for a new canteen. The bus driver started arguing with the students and shots were fired. The students ran into the University grounds. From the top of a building under construction they threw stones at the bus. Police officers were called in and opened fire. A student was shot as he attempted to escape into the building. Yesterday slogans were painted on walls and motorists were handed pamphlets protesting over the police action.
