    Background: HANOVER, WEST GERMANY

West German athletes led Poland, France and Czechoslovakia on June 15 after the first day of a Quadrangular track and field meeting in Hanover. West Germany's Harald Schmid won the 400-metres hurdles in 49.18 seconds, missing his earlier year's best by two hundredths of a second. Behind the 26-year-old European champion was Ryszard Szparak of Poland in 50.36 seconds. In the women's 400 metres, Czechoslovakia's world record holder Jarmila Kratochvilova won in 49.33 seconds - outside the world's best time this year of 48.86 set by East German Marita Koch. Second was Ute Thinn of West Germany in 51.85 seconds. West Germany's Ulrike Meyfarth won the high jump with 1.94 metres, equalising her previous best mark this year. But she declined to try for a higher jump, saying she wanted to play it safe after a leg injury earlier in the week.
