Background: In their second World Cup qualifying tie match on Wednesday (10 November) Belgium beat Northern Ireland 2-0. The game was played at the Standard Stadium in Liege, Belgium.

SYNOPSIS: Belgium -- in all white -- attacking. An early attempt at goal but sat by Northern Ireland.

Irish goalkeeper, Patrick Jennings. The Irish team gained possession and pushed towards their goal. They'd made several unsuccessful attempts earlier on and this try to score met the same expert opposition from Belgium goalkeeper, Christian Piot.

Belgium on the attack again. They were playing fast and stringing their passes together and with this combination scored their first goal in the 29th minute, off Roger Van Gool.

Spurred on by their success the Belgians soon had command of play again and headed for another goal. But Irish lad, James Nicholl, did well to prevent a second goal when he cleared desperately for a corner after Jennings was unable to hold a fierce shot by Michel Renquin.

Seven minutes after half time the Belgians scored another excellent goal off Raoul Lambert and with it killed the small element of competition remaining in the match. Van Gool had tricked Patrick Rice Lambert nodded into the net.

Both goals had originated on the Irish left and in the 64th minute Samuel Nelson, the Arsenal left back, took the place of Rice. The Belgian forwards' speed continued to torment the Irish defenders and shortly after Nicholl had made a fine tackle on Francois Van der Elst, Who had seemed certain to score, Nelson was booked for handling.

But Ireland wasn't giving in and Sam McIIroy made another attempt at goal -- but to no avail. In the closing minutes Van der Elst hit the bar and George Best, at last revealing his true class, sent a shot curling towards the top corner of the net but Piot brilliantly leapt to punch the ball over the bar.
