Background: The American players, John McEnroe and Chris Evert-Lloyd, were officially made world tennis champions in Paris on June 1. The two stars received their awards from the President of the International Tennis Federation, Mr. Chataier. Among those attending the ceremony was Chris Evert-Lloyd's husband, the British player John Lloyd. The world championship titles have been presented by the Federation since 1978 in an attempt to assess overall mastery from the numerous tennis tournaments each year. Points are awarded for success in the Grand Slam series, official tournaments played under the jurisdiction of the professional tennis councils, and major international team competitions. McEnroe easily emerged winner of the men's section : the closest challenge came from the Czech Ivan Lendl. Mrs Evert-Lloyd's closest rivals were Tracy Austin and Martina Navratilova.
