Background: To celebrate the arrival in Paris forty years ago of the first cultured pearl, kimono clad Japanese girls modelled a display of cultured pearl jewellery at the Hotel Crillon, Paris, France, Dec 5.

Centrepiece of the show was a three strand necklace worth twenty-five million old francs (approx GBP18,000). Each strand consisting of fifty-nine of the most perfectly matched pearls of pinkish hue.

Japanese pearl producers have so advanced their techniques, that it would take careful X-ray scrutiny to detect the tiny mother-of-pearl seedling in the centre of each cultured pearl.
