Background: IN DJAKARTA, AFRO-ASIAN COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HISTORIC BANDUNG CONFERENCE. PRESIDENT SUKARNO OF INDONESIA WAS HOST AT A BANQUET FOR GUESTS ON SATURDAY NIGHT, AND YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) PRESIDED AT A RALLY OPENING THE CELEBRATIONS PROPER.

THE CELEBRATIONS ARE DUE TO END TONIGHT (MONDAY), BUT UNOFFICIAL FESTIVITIES ARE EXPECTED TO GO ON UNTIL WEDNESDAY. IT WAS TEN YEARS AGO THIS MONTH THAT THE FIRST MAJOR CONFERENCE OF AFRICAN AND ASIAN NATIONS WAS HELD -- IN THE WESTERN JAVA CITY OF BANDUNG.

SOME 37 COUNTRIES HAVE SENT OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES TO THE CELEBRATIONS, WHILE THE OTHERS INVITED ARE BEING REPRESENTED BY THEIR AMBASSADORS TO INDONESIA.

DJAKARTA HAS BEEN GIVEN A CLEAN-UP FOR THE EVENT. BANNERS WITH SLOGANS ATTACKING IMPERIALISM AND SUPPORTING AFRO-ASIAN SOLIDARITY DECORATE THE STREETS.

THE STATE BANQUET WAS HELD AT THE HOTEL INDONESIA. SQUADS OF TROOPS GUARDED THE CORRIDORS AS GUESTS ARRIVED. AMONG THEM WERE THE CHINESE PRIME MINISTER, CHOU EN-LAI, THE NORTH KOREAN PRIME MINISTER, MARSHAL KIM IL SUNG, THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, DR SUBANDRIO, THE NORTH VIETNAMESE PRIME MINISTER, PHAM VAN DONG, PRINCE NORODOM SIHANOUK AND PRINCESS MONIQUE OF CAMBODIAN, AND PRINCE SOUPHANOUVONG OF LAOS. PRESIDENT SUKARNO PROPOSED THE TOAST.

DJAKARTA'S GIANT SPORTS PALACE WAS THE SITE FOR THE OPENING RALLY. BEFORE THE SPEECHES, MR CHOU LED DELEGATION HEADS IN SIGNING A PROTOCOL AGREEMENT - THE ACTE DE PRESEANCE. OPENING THE RALLY, PRESIDENT SUKARNO CALLED ON AFRO-ASIAN NATIONS TO CONFRONT THE UNITED NATIONS WHICH HE SAID WAS DOMINATED BY IMPERIALISTS. HE URGED THEM TO STAND ON THEIR OWN FEET ECONOMICALLY AND REJECT IMPERIALIST AID.

OTHER SPEAKERS INCLUDED THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. ZAKARIA MOHIDIN, THE ALGERIAN VICE-PRESIDENT, MR MOHAMMED SAID, THE MALI INFORMATION MINISTER, M. MAAMADON GALOGO, PRINCE SIHANOUK, AND PHAM VAN DONG.

VIETNAM, IMPERIALISM AND COLONIALISM DOMINATED SPEECHES AND STATEMENTS. MR CHOU CALLED ON ALL AFRO-ASIANS TO "SMASH ALL IMPERIALIST SCHEMES FOR AGGRESSION AND WAR."
MR PHAM VAN DONG AND PRINCE SIHANOUK BOTH DEMANDED THAT THE UNITED STATES WITHDRAW FROM SOUTH VIETNAM. THEY GOT BACKING FROM REPRESENTATIVES OF THE VIETCONG, THE ANTI-GOVERNMENT FORCES IN SOUTH VIETNAM, WHO ARE IN DJAKARTA FOR THE CELEBRATIONS.

JAPAN WAS REPRESENTED BY A SPECIAL ENVOY, MR KAWASHIMA, WHO TODAY (MONDAY) HAD TALKS WITH MR CHOU ON VIETNAM -- THE FIRST SINO-JAPANESE DIPLOMATIC MEETING FOR 20 YEARS.

THE CELEBRATIONS ALSO COULD SEE A MEETING BETWEEN TWO OF THE THREE LEADERS IN STRIFE-TORN LAOS. PRINCE SOUPHANOUVONG, OF THE PRO-COMMUNIST PATHET LAO FACTION, IS IN DJAKARTA, WHILE HIS HALF-BROTHER, PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMA, THE NEUTRALIST PRIME MINISTER, IS REPORTED TO BE READY TO FLY THERE.

(MEANWHILE, PREPARATIONS ARE GOING AHEAD FOR THE AFRO-ASIAN CONFERENCE IN ALGIERS IN JUNE, WHICH WILL BE A FOLLOW-UP TO THE ADDIS ABABA SUMMIT MEETING).
