Background: Chinese Chairman Hua Guofeng arrived in Munich on Friday (26 October) on the last stage of his one-week visit to West Germany. Chairman Hua travelled from Stuttgart by special train and was met by Conservative opposition leader and Bavarian state Premier Franz Josef Strauss. After his two-day stay in Munich, Chainman Hua will continue his four-nation Western European tour and leave for Britain where he was scheduled to stay for six days.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Strauss greeted the Chinese leader with a specially prepared phrase in Chinese - "A warm welcome to Bavaria". Although the two men hold widely differing political ideas, they agree firmly on one issue: their anxiety about the Soviet Union. During his West German tour, Chairman Hua has been restrained in his anti-Soviet stance, to save the Bonn government any embarrassment. He has said that he envisaged a unified Germany but left what observers saw as his most contentious remarks about Soviet influence until he arrived in Munich. During a luncheon, Chairman Hua accused the Soviet Union of moving towards world domination.

Apart from private negotiations with Mr. Strauss, Chairman Hua also visited the opera, an electronics factory and a department store. He stayed at Mr. Strauss' official residence, the Prinz Carl Palace. When Chairman Hua toured the ultra-modern Siemens plant he tested the firm's new telephone dialling system and had a minute-long conversation with an astonished employee of the Chinese Embassy in London.
