Background: At the end of the third round of the GBP51,000 John Player Golf Classic at Turnberry, Ayrshire, on Friday (September 29) there were only four players under pay: Bob Charles, (New Zealand), Peter Townsend (Scotland), Peter Oosterhuis (England) and Tony Jacklin (england).

Much of the play was affected by a testing wind that churned up the sea around the nearby lighthouse and caused problems to all the players except Charles, who ended the day with a level-pay round of 71 for a 54-hole total of 209. With 18 holes to play he has a one-point lead over Peter Townsend, whose 75 today was no mean achievement.

A stroke away again is Peter Oosterhuis, who took 74. Tony Jacklin has 212 after 75 today.

The battle between these four is still very much alive, and Harry Bannerman (Scotland) on 214 must still be counted a threat.

SYNOPSIS: In the third round of the fifty-one-thousand-pound John Player Classic at Turnberry in Scotland on Friday a boisterous wind made an already interesting contest a fascinating one. The American Billy Casper in the rough off the seventeenth hole fairway sliced his shot...

New Zealander Bob Charles--alone of all the players--coped with the testing conditions. He ended the day one stroke in the lead.

Peter Oosterhuis of England took seventy-four on Friday for a fifty-four hole total of two-hundred-and-eleven. Here at the fifteenth he holed a bunker shot for a two....
Tony Jacklin--still considered by many the player to beat ended the day with a seventy-five, for two-hundred-and-twelve.

Peter Townsend of Scotland dropped his lead to Bob Charles in the third round but still lay second one stroke behind.

Brian Huggett entered the round in second place but ended it sixth--after the Scottish champion, Harry Bannerman.

For Jacklin the day started well but he three-putted for a five at the sixth hole, and followed with six at the ninth. Here at the eighteenth he had another five for a round total of seventy-five.

At the end of round three the top four players were hard on each other's heels.
