    Background: President of Tanzania, Mwalima Julius Nyerere today launched a "Mile of Money" fund-raising for a village to be built for Tanzanias orphaned and abandoned children.

    President Nyerere started Mile of Money by placing his GBP5 note on the white line painted along the DaresSalaam's main street - Independence Avenue - on both side, making it a mile long. After the President placed the money, hundreds of school children and shop-keepers followed him and started placing coins and notes on the line.

    President Nyerere placed the money twice - each time a GBP5 note.

    On arrival at the Mile of Money ceremony President Nyerere was met by Mr Derek Brayson, Tanzania Minister for Health (the only whiteman in Tanzania cabinet) and was then introduced to Mr B. Hilt Chairman of DaresSalaam Round Table and Mr R. H. Snelling President of DaresSalaam Rotary Club. Mr Hilt and Mr Snelling are actively connected with raising fund for Children Village.

    Thousands of School-children and shop-keepers lined the main street, also included were there horses who collected money by giving ride to school children down the main street. The horses were provided by the DaresSalaam Sunny Horse Ranch.
