Background: A delegation from the Federation of Arab Republic -- Egypt, Syria and Libya -- has received a renewed declaration of support from Nigeria. The Nigerian head of state General Yakubu Gowon told the delegation on Monday (28 January) that Nigeria fully backed Egypt in efforts for a just, honourable and lasting peace in the Middle East.
In return, the leader of the delegation, Mr. Mohammed Taha Haddad of Syria, thanked General Gowon for Nigerian support for the Arabs in their efforts to regain Israeli occupied territory.
During the meeting at Dodan Barracks, General Gowon told the delegation that the energy crisis and rise in the price of oil in adversely affecting most African countries. The General, who is chairman of the Organisation of African Unity, urged that the problem should be investigated by all concerned so that an acceptable solution could be found.
