Background: Hong Kong's second satellite station was formally opened toady by HRH Princess Anne. She recorded a speech which was included in the first direct satellite transmission direct from the Colony to Britain. Hong Kong already has one satellite station, but this is directed towards the Pacific Ocean satellite. Any broadcasts to britain, using this station, have had to be sent across the Pacific and re-transmitted again by another satellite over the Atlantic. The new station is directed towards another satellite over the Indian Ocean. which enables broadcasts and telephone calls to reach Britain in a single transmission.
The Princess first inspected the 97 feet dish antenna which beams signals to the Indian Ocean satellite. She then visited the control room to record her broadcast. She was watched on color TV monitors by staff employed at the satellite station.
