    Background: INTRODUCTION:
Moves to defuse the Lebanese conflict suffered a setback on Friday (29 May) after repeated Israeli attacks on Palestinian targets. The previous day's fighting saw the Israeli air force back in action after the temporary suspension of U.S. Envoy Philip Habib's peace efforts. Israel's air strikes coincided with talks between Lebanon and Syria aimed at convening an inter-Arab committee to discuss the Lebanese crisis, and with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin's announcement that he would be meeting Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to discuss the conflict.

SYNOPSIS: In Lebanon itself armed factions continue to try and gain the upper hand, with fierce fighting taking place.

On Wednesday (27 May) Christian militiamen took up new positions in the hills above the port of Byblos in northern Lebanon. To the east lies the Bekaa valley, the scene of some of the bitterest fighting so far. These hills are of strategic importance overlooking the main road to Damascus. They have been the scene of several attempts by the All-Syrian Arab Defence Force (ADF) to wrest control from the Christians.

Although Christian forces controlled this summit, the ADF was not far away on the opposite hill, and brief exchanges of fire were a frequent occurrence.

A 100 kilometres (60 miles) further south Palestinian forces prepared themselves for the daily bombardment of their position at Beaufort castle, its dominating position as important now as it was when it was built during the Crusades in the 11th Century.

Nearby, close to the town of Marjayoun, more Palestinians took up positions to face the Israeli backed forces of the Christian leader Major Haddad.

The area is an easy target for Israeli attacks and the Palestinians have had to instal their heaviest artillery and mortars to defend themselves.
