Background: Fighting has broken out between various factions of the Khmer forces opposed to the Vietnamese-backed government in Kampuchea (formerly Cambodia). The clashes happened close to the Thai border, and although Thai officials say they have been between the left-wing Khmer Rouge and the rightist Khmer Serei, reports of just who are involved vary.

SYNOPSIS: The fighting, not far from the Thai town of Nong Samet, has sent tens of thousands of refugees fleeing across the border form their shanties in the Kampuchean jungle. Red Cross workers are meeting them with food and medical attention. Just how the fighting started is not clear.

These men are members of the right-wing guerilla movement, the Khmer Serei.

Some reports say that the struggle is between two factions of the Khmer Serei aligned against a third faction which wants to join the Khmer Rouge. Leaders of the alliance say the fighting started when Khmer Rouge forces tried to infiltrate the shanty complex known as Camp 007. Leaders of the faction wanting to join with the Khmer Rouge say it broke out when their opponents started rounding up those who favoured the merger. At least twenty people have been killed and another hundred have been wounded so far.

Since first outbreak of fighting last Friday (5 January) there have been clashes around other refugee shanties just inside Kampuchea and the Thai military have had to fire warning shots at guerrillas when battles have spilled over the border. Local observers say that while the cause of the fighting remains uncertain one thing is clear -- it has greatly damaged chances of a united anti-Vietnamese front being formed in the near future.

The refugees who have stayed at camp 007 seem to accept the fighting. They have lived with an army of on a kind pitted against an army of another for so long now.
