Background: The President of Senegal, Leopold Senghor, arrived at Ouagadougou airport in Upper Volta on Tuesday (8 May) on his way home from Mauritius and the Central African Republic. He was greeted by Upper Volta's Head of State, General Sangoule Lamizana.
Travelling with President Senghor was Upper Volta's Prime Minister, Gerard Ouedraogo. Both men had been to the summit conference in mauritius of the African,Malagasy and Mauritian Common Organisation (OCAM), of which President Senghor is the Chairman. Both leaders had also made a joint visit to the Central African Republic.
At the OCAM summit President Senghor strongly urged that English-speaking African nations should join the Yaounde Convention. At the moment the Convention is made up of only French-speaking nations who have special trade links with the European Economic Community. These moves are especially significant with the Summit Conference of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) due to be held on May 18.
