Background: The new Bangladesh Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was sworn in on Friday (16 March) at a ceremony in Dacca. They were the first elections since the territory broke away from Pakistan last year.

The 21 Cabinet members received the oath of office and oath of secrecy from President Justice Abu Sayeed Choudhury.

As well as retaining his previous portfolios of Defence and Cabinet Affairs, Sheikh Mujibur has also taken over that of Planning. Three members of the outgoing Cabinet were dropped and there was only one new addition -- Mr. Monoranjan Dhar, Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs.

In addition to retaining his previous posts of Industries and Nationalised Industries, Mr. Syed Nazrul Islam has also been given responsibility for the Jute Mills Corporation. Mr. M.A.G. Osmany, Minister for Shipping, Inland Water Transport, Aviation and Posts, has also taken on Telegraphs and Telecommunications.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz has been given the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, previously held by Mr. Mizanur Rahman Choudhury, who has been made Minister for Relief and Rehabilitation. Mr. Phani Mazumdar retains responsibility for Food and Civil Supplies.
