Background: The mandate of the United Nations' force helping to keep the peace between Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights has been extended -- at least until next June.

This was decided by the U.N.'s Security Council on Friday (29 November) and follows the recent visit to the area by the U.N.'s secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim.

During his visit Dr. Waldheim said that the continued operation of the United Nations' Disengagement Observer Force -- known officially as U.N.D.O.F. -- was essential, "not only for the maintenance of the present quiet in the area, but also to assist any further efforts towards the establishment of a just and durable peace in the Middle East."
The 1,200-man force, which includes contingents from Austria, Canada, Peru and Poland, was established to help implement the Israeli-Syrian troops disengagement agreement signed last May.

A similar, but bigger, unit -- called the U.N. Emergency Force (U.N.E.F.) -- patrols a buffer zone between the Israeli and Egyptian armies in the Sinai desert. Its current mandate, renewed in October, runs until April 1975.
