Background: The Mauritanian head of state Lieutenant Colonel Mustapha Ould Mohammed Salek has made a brief visit to his country's southern neighbour Senegal. The president was accompanied during his visit by high government officials. His visit came at a time (6 October) when President Ould Salek is developing his country's relations with its neighbours as part of his bid for peace in the Western Sahara.

SYNOPSIS: In his search for peace, President Ould Salek also recently flew to Morocco (18 September), now more involved than mauritania in the battle with the Polisario guerrillas' for the Western Sahara. A ceasefire exists between the guerrillas and Mauritania. President Ould Salek now visits his other neighbour to discuss the situation. Senegal's President Leopold Senghor met him at the airport.

Senegal has tended to support two United Nations resolutions which Senegalese authorities say are complementary. One of them supports the right of the people of the Sahara to self determination. The other recognises the partition of the Western Sahara following Spain's withdrawal in 1975. Before beginning their talks, the two presidents inspected a guard of honour, and displayed the warm relations between them.

President Ould Salek's visit to Senegal follows new demands made to Mauritania by the Polisario Front.
