Background: Ten years ago, the Yugoslavian capital city of Sarajevo, welcomed the youth of the world to celebrate the Winter Olympics Games of 1984.

Now as a war torn, besieged capital of a former Yugoslav republic, Sarajevo is a city of constant destruction, despairing inhabitants and powerless United Nations military.

In 1984, this bustling, pretty city hosted the 14th Winter Olympiad and thrilled to the exploits of Matti Nykanen, Katarina Witt, Pirmin Zurbriggen and Torvill and Dean.

The Opening Ceremony was held in the Kosevo Stadium and was presided over by Juan Antonio Samaranch, his first Games since taking the office as Olympic President, in 1980.

Sanda Dubravcic, a 19 year-old ice skater, carried the Olympic torch, up 94 steps to light the "Flame Of Friendship" and open the Games.

For 12 days, the eyes of the world focussed on this small slavic city, as the exploits of the world's best winter athletes, unfolded.

For the past 22 months, the eyes of the world have watched as Sarajevo and its Olympic memories, have slowly been systematically destroyed by the warring factions of the former Yugoslavia.

The Games of the 17th Winter Olympiad begin in Lillehammer, Norway on Saturday (February 12).
