Background: THE ITALIAN FISHING PORT OF POZZUOLI IN THE BAY OF NAPLES IS IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY AS A RESULT OF AN EARTH MOVEMENT KNOWN AS BRADYSEISM-A RISING OF THE GROUND ON THE CREST OF A "SLOW EARTHQUAKE". ALREADY A HOSPITAL, A CHURCH SCHOOL AND SEVERAL PRIVATE AND OFFICE BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN EVACUATED, AND TEAMS OF SCIENTISTS AND EXPERTS ARE CARRYING OUT CHECKS ON BUILDINGS, ROADS AND BRIDGES.
THE EARTH RISING AT POZZUOLI IS NOT ENTIRELY NEW - IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 200 YEARS AS THE TOWN LIES ON A VOLCANIC CHAIN - BUT IN RECENT TIMES THE RELATIVE LEVEL BETWEEN LAND AND SEA HAS INCREASED, CAUSING MORE SERIOUS CRACKING IN THE ROADS AND THE BUILDINGS THAN EVER BEFORE.
THE MAYOR OF THE TOWN HAS ASKED THE POPULATION OF 70,000 TO MAINTAIN CALM - BUT ALREADY MANY ARE SPEAKING OF MOVING TO OTHER TONS. SOME STREETS HAVE BEEN CLOSED TO TRAFFIC FOR FEAR THAT THE WEIGHT OF CONTINUING PASSING OF VEHICLES COULD INCREASE THE DANGER OF COLLAPSE.
IN ALL, TEN NEW VOLCANIC FISSURES HAVE OPENED UP AND ARE EMITTING SULPHURUS FUMES - AND ONE LEADING PHYSICIST HAS SAID THAT A VOLCANIC ERUPTION COULD FOLLOW, BUT THAT THIS WAS UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN WITHOUT CONSIDERABLE OTHER WARNING SIGNS.
