Background: Argentina, represented by Guillermo Vilas and Jose Luis Clerc, has won the Nations Cup Tennis tournament in Dusseldorf, West Germany. The Argentinians defeated the Italians. Adriano Panatta and Paulo Bertolucci, 3-0 in the final. The highlight of the tournament was Vilas' victory over Sweden's Bjorn Borg in the semi-final on Sunday (11 May). It was the Wimbledon the champion's first defeat in 50 consecutive singles matches.

SYNOPSIS: Borg had not lost a singles match since the United States Championship last September and Vilas had only taken three games in their last meeting. But for this match, the left handed Argentinian stayed well behind the baseline and took advantage of a poor start by the Swede.

All tickets for the semi-finals had been sold out and were rumoured to be worth 100 pounds (sterling) on the blackmarket. In the perfect conditions, the crowd were treated to some excellent tennis with Vilas the more confident player.

Vilas won the first set 6-3 continually taking advantage of uncharacteristic errors from Borg.

The blond Swede recovered his touch in the second set to level the match but the Argentinian was still serving well and tiring his opponent with consistent ground strokes. By the beginning of the third set Borg's usually faultless concentration began to waver.

Vilas took control of the third and deciding set as Borg lost the clay court accuracy which is his trademark. It was his first defeat on this type of surface since 1976.

For Vilas it was a memorably victory with a final scoreline of 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. And for Argentina it meant a place in the final against Italy, victors over the United States team of Harold Solomon and Gene Mayer.
