Background: DR. KWAME NKRUMAH WAS SWORN IN YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) AS PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA FOR A FURTHER FIVE YEARS. HIS NEW TERM FOLLOWED A COLOURFUL CEREMONY AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE IN ACCRA.

DR. NKRUMAH, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS EGYPTIAN-BORN WIFE, WAS RE-ELECTED BY THE NEW, ENLARGED PARLIAMENT OF F198 MEMBERS. ALL OF THEM BELONG TO THE RULING CONVENTION PEOPLE'S PARTY AND WERE RETURNED UNOPPOSED, WHICH MEANS GHANA IS NOW A ONE-PARTY STATE.

DRUMS THROBBED IN THE BACKGROUND AS HE ARRIVED. HE WAS POURED A LIBATION OF SPIRIT BEFORE HE ENTERED PARLIAMENT HOUSE. MANY VISITORS TO THE CEREMONY WERE SEARCHED.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE, JULIUS SARKODEE-ADOO, ADMINISTERED THE PRESIDENTIAL OATH, DR. NKRUMAH, SITTING ON A GOLDEN THRONE AND HOLDING THE STATE SWORD, SWORE ALLEGIANCE TO GHANA AND PROMISED TO PRESERVE AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION.

HE ALSO DECLARED THAT "FREEDOM AND JUSTICE SHOULD BE HONOURED AND MAINTAINED," AND UNDERTOOK THAT "THE UNION OF AFRICA BE STRIVEN FOR BY EVERY LAWFUL MEANS."
(MEANWHILE, AT A MINISTERIAL COUNCIL MEETING IN LAGOS OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY, GHANA'S THREE FRENCH-SPEAKING NEIGHBOURS ACCUSED HER OF HARBOURING REFUGEES FROM THEIR COUNTRIES AND TRAINING THEM TO RETURN AND ATTACK THEIR GOVERNMENTS. IT WAS REPORTED THAT GHANA HAD PROVISIONALLY AGREED TO EXPEL CERTAIN REFUGEES. THE THREE COUNTRIES ARE THE IVORY COAST, UPPER VOLTA AND NIGER).
