"He let it fly, we're on our way, so, he's driven that pretty good the way it looks ... a little bit to the right hand side. You can see him indicating with his hand that it did drift to the right and the player's a little far back, he didn't see it in flight and this is costing him a lot of seconds. Peter Boyle from the Midway Golf Club ... he's taken quite a while to get to that ball and he shoots his second shot -- probably a six or seven iron -- up towards the green. He'll probably play a little short, trying to keep away from the putts, but he hasn't succeeded. He's got it in a bunker and Max Tuckinham??? from the Sunshine Golf Club looks like he hit that one out pretty good. But I think there's another bunker over there if he's not careful, so this first hole's been a disaster somewhat. He's still taken way too much time. He's messed around. They've taken over 40 seconds for the hole now. They're still messing around there. They've got a few putts to go before it gets in. They're not allowed to touch the ball, or stop its progress. It's in.

"Howard McHutchiss, he's got to knock this one cold, if they're going to have any chance, because they've only got about 50 seconds left. And he's hit a beautiful shot there. He's only knocked it 3 or 4 feet from the hole. Come on boys, get it in there, quick. Look at that, O.K.

"Now they're off on the 18th hole, and they've got how much left Brian? 10.25 elapsed ... they've got themselves 30-odd seconds, yeah. So, they've blasted it down the field. So they've got ... 10.58 point 4 is the record. He's blasted this thing. It's got to get on the green and so far there's 10.41, 44, 45 -- come on, they've only got themselves about 5 seconds left. They've got to get this in within the next 3 seconds .. 1, 2, 3, it's got to go in -- it's in"

Background: Seventy Australian golfers from Melbourne have set a world record for the fastest eighteen-hole round of golf.

On Saturday (2 December) they took just 10 minutes and 54 seconds to complete the round. Their time was 4.4 seconds inside the previous record, established in Ontario, Canada, two years ago.

The record was made in the presence of an official from the Guinness Book of Records who said it would be officially recognised.

The players -- 35 professionals and 35 amateurs -- did not play shots simultaneously. But, the moment the ball was putted out, another was teed up and driven from the next tee. The golfers positioned themselves around the 5.793-mitre (yard) course and played shots when the ball landed near them.

No score was kept -- this was not part of this particular attempt -- and no balls were lost.

SYNOPSIS: Melbourne golfers set a new world record for a complete round of 18-hole golf on Saturday. They beat the previous record by just over 4 seconds. And -- all 70 of them -- managed the course in just ten minutes 54 seconds. A G.T.V. Channel Nine, Melbourne reporter tells the story from the first tee:
