Background: THE FORESTS OF THE COASTAL SPURS OF NEW SOUTH WALES' EASTERN HIGHLANDS, ARE RICH WITH THE AUSTRALIAN HARDWOOD WHICH IS MUCH IN DEMAND FOR BUILDING AND A VARIETY OF OTHER USES.

SOON AFTER DAWN, MEN ARE AT WORK, SPLITTING THE SILENCE OF THE FORESTS WITH THE NOISE OF CHAIN-SAWS, FALLING TREES, AND BULLDOZERS. THE RIMMED LOGS ARE DRAGGED AWAY BY POWERFUL CRAWLER TRACTORS, WHICH ARE THE ONLY VEHICLES CAPABLE OF HAULING THE HUGE LOADS THROUGH BUSH WHICH IS LINED WITH DEEP CREEKS AND GULLIES.

THE BULLDOZER CLEARS THE UNDERGROWTH AHEAD AS IT DRAGS THE TREE TRUNKS, TO BE LOADED ONTO THE TIMBER JUNKER.

AT THE LOG DUMP, ONE OF THE TIMBER JUNKERS IS READY TO LOAD THREE GIANT BLACKBUTT LOGS. THE FOREST IN WHICH THESE MEN ARE WORKING IS ON THE NORTH COAST OF NEW SOUTH WALES.

THE LAST LOG IS PUSHED ABOARD,AND THE JUNKER, CARRYING ENOUGH TIMBER TO BUILD A MEDIUM-SIZED THREE BEDROOM WEATHERBOARD HOUSE, SETS OFF TO THE HERON'S CREEK MILL, 19 MILES AWAY. HERON'S CREEK, ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST HARDWOOD MILLS, PRODUCES ANNUALLY 17,000,000 SUPER-FEET OF TIMBER.

AFTER THE JUNKER CREWS CHECK THE LOGS AT THE MEASURING STATION, WHICH IS ALONGSIDE THE MILL, THE TIMBER IS SAWN AND SENT FOR USE IN BUILDING, AS PLY AND VENEERS, FIBRE-BOARD, PAPER, AND EVEN PLASTICS.
