Background: Dr. Lin Yu-tang, one of modern China's leading authors and scholars, on Thursday (April 1) was buried at the garden of his residence on the hillside of scenic Yang-Ming-Shan overlooking Taipei.
Dr. Lin, author of 40 books and former Chancellor of the Nanyang University in Singapore, died of heart failure in Hongkong last Friday. His remains were airlifted to Taipei for burial according to his will.
Only the family and a handful of Dr. Lin's close friends were present at the simple burial ceremony conducted with Christian rites.
Taiwanese President Yen Chia-kan and Premier Chiang Ching-kuo attended religious rites held at Taipei's Grace Baptist Church early this week.
The late Chinese scholar-humourist is survived by two daughters, Lin Tai-yi, Editor of the Chinese editor of the Reader's Digest, and Lin Hsiang-yu, a professor at Hongkong University.
