    AN IMPORTANT PROVISION OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL NOW UNDER CONSIDERATION BY THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS WILL MAKE IT UNLAWFUL FOR A RESTAURANT OR HOTEL TO DENY SERVICE TO ANYONE BECAUSE OF RACE. THE PROVISION IS AIMED PRINCIPALLY AT HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS IN THE SOUTHERN STATES.

    IN JACKSONVILLE, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE, (N.A.A.C.P.) STAGED A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST SOME OF THE CITY'S RESTAURANTS AND HOTELS WHICH HAVE CATERED EXCLUSIVELY TO WHITE PATRONS. ABOUT ONE HUNDRED PICKETS LEFT FROM THE BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH AND HEADED FOR THE RESTAURANT AND HOTEL AREA. THEY THEN SPLIT UP. ONE GROUP PICKETED MORRISON'S CAFETERIA, ANOTHER THE ROBERT MEYER HOTEL, AND OTHERS PICKETED OUTSIDE LEB'S RESTAURANT, THE GEORGE WASHINGTON HOTEL AND THE AMBER HOUSE RESTAURANT. LEB'S IS ONE OF A CHAIN OF RESTAURANTS; ITS BRANCH AN ATLANTA, GEORGIA WAS RECENTLY THE SCENE OF THREE DAYS OF RACIAL DEMONSTRATIONS. THE PICKET'S CARRIED AMERICAN FLAGS AND SIGNS URGING AN END TO SEGREGATION. ONE, CARRIED BY A PICKET AT THE GEORGE WASHINGTON HOTEL REFERRED TO GENERAL WASHINGTON AND SAID: "I AM A SOLDIER TOO, WHY CAN'T I SLEEP HERE?"
    JACKSONVILLE POLICE KEPT A CAREFUL EYE ON THE DEMONSTRATION. THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS.
