Background: At least three people were reported killed and ten wounded when Israeli guns pounded rural areas of southern Lebanon on Monday (25 June). The attack was in retaliation for a rocket attack on an Israeli settlement and a guerrilla raid on Lebanese village, controlled by Israeli backed militia. No casualties were reported in the two raids.
SYNOPSIS: Among the dead in the Israeli shelling in southern Lebanon was a seventeen-year-old Moslem girl from Reihan village. Her death came the day after twenty people were reported killed in an Israeli air raid on Sunday (24 June) in retaliation for a Palestinian bomb attack which killed two Arabs in a Tel Aviv bus station.
Sanaa Zahr, was harvesting tobacco in the fields surrounded surrounding Reihan village when she was killed. Her funeral was an occasion for public feelings to be expressed at the attack. Townspeople joined the funeral procession from Sanaa's house to the mosque. The State run Beirut Radio said two people in the village of Hasbaya also died in the raid and seven were injured.
The official Lebanese News Agency said several shells also hit the nearby town of Nabatiyeh wounding three people.
Reihan village and surrounding settlements are Palestinian guerrillas areas. Nabatiyeh, which is the local market centre, is also a stronghold for the Palestinian commandos and their Lebanese leftist allies.
The prayers of the Moslem holy men have been heard often during the war. The raids and bombings have become part of the way of life in the Southern lebanese villages which border Israel and provide bases for the Palestinian commandos.
