Background: Mineral experts from 34 countries have been meeting in Morocco at the first International Congress on Phosphorus Compounds.
SYNOPSIS: The Congress opened on Monday (17 October) at the Rabat Hilton Hotel. Its aim is to encourage the sharing of ideas and developments on the use of phosphorus compounds.
Dr. A.D.F. Toy of the United States gave the introductory lecture, entitled "Phosphorus Chemistry in Everyday Living".
The five-day Congress has been organised by the World Phosphate Rock Institute, (IMPHOS) which was founded four years ago. The main use of phosphorus compounds is for fertilizers but IMPHOS would like to see a growth in other applications, especially after last year's world slump in phosphates. In between discussions, delegates have been visiting Moroccan mines and fertilizer plants.
