Background: THE DUTCH MOTORCYCLING GRAND PRIX AT ASSEN. A LOOK AT YESTERDAY'S (SATURDAY'S) 125, 250 AND 550cc EVENTS ...

JIM REDMAN, THE RHODESIAN MOTORCYCLING STAR, SCORED A TREBLE. THE WORLD CHAMPION FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS IN THE 250 cc CLASSES, HE SET UP RECORD RACE AND LAP FIGURES IN THEM AND IN THE 125cc RACE.

RIDING JAPANESE HONDA MACHINES, HE CONSOLIDATED HIS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD IN THE 250cc AND 350cc EVENTS AND DREW UP TO WITHIN FOUR POINTS OF LEADER LUIGI TAVERI OF SWITZERLAND IN THE 125cc CLASS.

THE 250cc RACE PROVIDED THE BEST FINISH OF THE DAY. REDMAN AND BRITAIN'S PHIL READ (YAMAHA), WHO HAD BEEN VIRTUALLY NECK THROUGHOUT THE RACE, ROARED OVER THE LINE WITH REDMAN THE WINNER BY ONLY ABOUT A YARD.

MIKE HAILWOOD, BRITAIN'S WORLD 500cc CHAMPION, SCORED HIS THIRD WIN IN THE FIVE RACES SO FAR HELD IN THE SENIOR SERIES THIS SEASON AND NOW LEADS THE TABLE WITH 24 POINTS -- 17 MORE THAN HIS NEAREST RIVAL. RIDING AN M.V., HAILWOOD LED FROM START TO FINISH.
