Background: The Second World Championships of Taekwondo the korean originated bare hand martial art, opened in Seoul on Thursday (28 August).)
Over 170 competitors from 30 countries including Yugoslavia, the only Communist bloc nation taking part contested the titles in the eight different divisions from finweight to heavyweight.

Taekwondo is one of Korea's most ancient military arts, older than Karate and Sorima Kwonbok which was created by ??? of China in 520 A.D. This was used as a means of self defence before armour was adopted.

But as armour developed, military techniques changed and Taekwondo became more an art or sport than a means of defence.

In the opening rounds there was plenty of tough competition as wall as special displays of Taekwondo. As with other martial arts, Taekwondo involves all the elements in training of the body and this training can be given to anyone without regard to age, or sex.

The four day tournament ends on Sunday (31 August). The team placing will; be decided by the number of gold medals gained by individual competitors of each country.)
