Background: Canadian beauty treatment comes to Britain: a new beauty establishment, claimed to be the "world's largest and most lavishly equipped figure improvement salon for women", opened on Jan. 5th in London's Oxford Street.
In plush-carpeted, air-conditioned premises covering more than half an acre there is every kind of machine for figure improvement, and treatment is available until 9 p.m. But the motto is "figure perfection through exercise", so there is plenty of hard work to be done on most of the equipment.
For the stationary bicycle, it is claimed that they give the benefit of a 5-mile ride in 10 minutes.... "A good general machine for improving posture and tightening tummy muscles" says the press hand-out.
Then there are the rowing machines ("war-up, posture, reducing" etc.), and the Gracelines apparatus - a weight-lifting device costing an alleged GBP10,000 and good for the sagging chin line, among other things.
The Pony Rollers are for reducing "legs, thighs (outside and inside)...seat or buttocks...same principle as hand massage", and for "spot reducing, for hips, tummy and thighs" there are electrically operated Vibratory Belts, giving clients a good vigorous wobble treatment which they rather surprisingly seem to enjoy.
Other equipment includes Leg Beautifiers, a Bust Builder, and a Hip Trimmer. Throughout the salon, penetrating even to the steam rooms, there is soothing background music. Membership of the salon is GBP20 annually, and for an extra GBP12 quarterly (GBP20 for six months) you get the use of a separate lounge known as the Executive Area and "the privilege of massage"0. The beauty equipment is almost soundless and weighs a grand total of 27 tons.
The new salon is launched by a Canadian firm which already runs a chain of similar beauty houses in Canada, the USA and Australia, and which now hopes to establish salons throughout Britain.
