Background: The Cuban Prime Minister, Fidel Castro, arrived in Sofia on Wednesday (May 17) at the start of an official ten-day visit. He was welcomed at the airport by President Todor Zhivkov, and other Bulgarian officials. The Cuban leader's visit is part of a tour of nine African and eastern European countries, involving his longest absence from Cuba since he took power.

Following a reception given in his honour by President Zhivkov on Wednesday evening. Prime Minister Castro was scheduled to have official talks with Bulgarian leaders starting on Thursday (May 18).

During his stay he will also visit a scientific research institute, an agro-industrial complex and a number of Black Sea resorts.

The Cuban leader travelled to Sofia from Algeria where, during a ten-day visit, the solidarity of the two countries with the Vietnamese and other third world peoples was repeatedly stressed.
